As a team we were given the task to make a 3 minute long film with the genre thriller. Within this task we had to do research into the audience we were targeting, what is counted as “essential” in thriller films by different audience types. I worked in a group of 3 people but knew I had a personal role to make sure that my scene in the film was planned thoroughly, shot well and edited to make sure it showed exactly what I was trying to show to the audience.
Research/ creative process
During our first team meeting, we decided what sub-genre we wanted to do. We chose to do the subgenre crime as we found it to be most popular with our target audience. We also decided that when filming we would film outside of school, on location. By doing this, we felt it would make our film look more realistic and that it would also be alot easier to film due to there being less footfall in our chosen place to film.
Our team meeting was very productive and it was easy for us to be able to decide how we would get around each task that needed to be done as well as making sure each person knew their role in the group and how their scene would fit in with the plot of our film. By spreading each task between us, it took alot of stress off each individual. Although we did spread each task, we all supported each other whilst doing them so they were done to the best of our abilities.
We did research into what was popular with different audiences in order to create the best film for the audience we were trying to appeal to. We did this by creating a google form. We had a combination of different questions including age, gender and their favourite thing that thriller films contain. We spread this across many different social media platforms including snapchat, Instagram and facebook as well as emailing it to different year groups throughout the school so that there was a mix between the ages of people filling out the questionnaire.
Overall the research was very interesting as we saw the range of different features people of all different ages enjoyed. This was very helpful as it allowed us to pick a target audience, which helped us then pick our sub genre, crime.
Logistics
During the pre production process, we have several logistic problems we needed to overcome. One big issue that we needed to take into consideration was coronavirus, due to coronavirus it meant that only two of us could film together at a time. This was sometimes difficult due to not being able to film any shots with all 3 actors in the shot or actors being able to be closer than two meters apart.
Due to coronavirus a lot of our filming had to be cancelled or reschuelded due to members of the group needing to self isolate.
Finance
Working on a full scale production of a thriller film would have some huge costs to go with them, as we were doing our film on a very small budget we had to take some cuts and work our way around certain parts of creating our film in order to keep the costs low. For example, instead of having to pay for the filming and sound equipment, we borrowed it which cut down costs frantically.
By using public area to film , it was alot cheaper due to not having to hire out an area and using a public area. Before filming we did a risk assessment on the area we used to film. The area we filmed was risk assessed by members of our group. By doing this we saved more money due to not having to pay others to do it.
